In his book Living Proof, Lucas Boyce summarizes an exceptional leader as someone who does for others without seeking anything in return. As this definition stands, there is no doubting the servant leadership style of Terri Burdine, partner of McGladrey, the nation’s leading business advisor to the middle market. However, in a story of tragedy-turned-triumph, professionals at McGladrey who work with Terri were able to do just that – return the favor in a meaningful way.

In March 2014, Burdine’s nephew, Ty Clements, passed away at the age of 9. He had attended Mila Elementary school in Brevard County as a special needs child with autism. A Facebook page called “Live and Love like Ty” was created, a rallying cry that brought together family, friends and other supporters as a celebration of Ty’s life and impact on those he encountered. This Facebook page was dedicated to his remembrance and designed to fundraise for a brand new playground for Mila Elementary.

While fundraising on the “Live and Love like Ty” page was in full force, so were McGladrey’s efforts around its annual PGA golf tournament, the McGladrey Classic. The Fall Series PGA Tournament held in Sea Island, Ga. raises money through its foundation, The Davis Love Foundation. It also encourages local McGladrey offices to give back to the community by raising money of its own and finding a charity to support. There was little question throughout the office that “Live and Love Like Ty” would receive all of the money raised.

Through the generous community support and the McGladrey office, more than $60,000 was raised to build a new playground at Mila Elementary. The playground is scheduled to be built by the summer of this year. Through the actions of many, Ty Clements is continuing to teach us how to live and love life every day.
