Farewell To A Difference Maker: Ron Oats, CEO Central Florida Council Boy Scouts of America

Since moving to Orlando in 2006, Ron Oats, Chief Executive Officer at the Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America, has become a fixture in the local community creating successful partnerships.

He has a knack for connecting people, communities, businesses and causes in a way that makes everyone stronger. He has been active in our community, serving on the African American Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the local BB&T Bank Board, the Advisory Board of Florida Citrus Sports, and was recognized as one of Orlando Business Journal’s top fundraising professionals. As the CEO of the Central Florida Council, he aims to leverage his relationships to best help the more than 50,000 youth in seven counties the Boy Scouts serves.

Starting July 1, 2016, Ron will move on to his next role in his 30-year long career with the Boy Scouts as both the Southern Regional Director, overseeing 89 council offices in 13 states, serving more than 900,000 youth, and the Boy Scout’s National Chief Diversity Officer. “I started my scouting career as a Program Aide, developing scouting programs in the housing projects of Miami, exposing at-risk, often African American and Hispanic boys, to valuable experiences, mentors and new hobbies that they could utilize later in their life,” commented Ron. “To this day I reflect on those experiences and they remain my inspiration to expand scouting to all youth in our community. I’m excited, now, to have the opportunity to serve in a greater capacity as the Southern Regional Director.”

Ron has continued to bring scouting to underserved populations here in Central Florida. Sheriff Demings, a member of the Central Florida Council Board and strong scouting partner, said, “Ron did an extraordinary job of expanding scouting into diverse communities in Central Florida and truly made a difference in the lives of thousands of youth. His fundraising and executive talents will be missed by our local Boy Scout Council and I am proud to call him a friend.” Jeff Jennings, President of Jack Jennings & Sons, Inc., and former Central Florida Council Board President, recalled, “Ron Oats’ legacy in our Central Florida scouting community is evident in a new ‘ROI’ that he promoted and fostered. Results – Outcome – Impact. Our Central Florida Boy Scout Council was blessed to have his leadership and passion for the past ten years.”

One of Ron’s strongest impacts on the Central Florida Council will be expanding its Board of Directors, helping broaden the reach of scouting in the community and bringing in community leaders. As Tico Perez, National Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America and former President of the Central Florida Council, said, “Ron inspires those around him to become leaders and has a track record of developing his staff to become senior leaders in the Boy Scouts across America. His legacy extends past just himself and the leadership team he has cultivated in Central Florida to the staff he has empowered to serve all over the nation, and now he gets to share that characteristic Ron Oats spirit with even more people.”

Farewell, Ron! Central Florida will certainly miss you.
