Pinellas County Gateway toll road project for FDOT/Archer-Western/deMoya/BCC means 4 years of work and more jobs for geotechnical firm’s Tampa office.
TAMPA, FL – Universal Engineering Sciences, Inc. (Universal) celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Tampa office by landing an 11-milion-dollar contract for work on the $554 million Gateway Expressway project in Pinellas County, the Orlando-based geotechnical engineering firm announced this week. It is the largest single project in terms of monetary value in the firm’s 53-year history, and will mean increases in the company’s 700 plus workforce, according to Universal’s President Mark Israel.
Universal will work as a sub-consultant to BCC for design services and the awarded joint venture team of Archer Western and The de Moya Group for construction services on the huge, four-plus-year Florida Department of Transportation project.
Mark Hardy, PE, Universal’s regional manager for West Central Florida, said the company would be responsible for a number of engineering, geotechnical and structural services on the overhead tollway project including drilling, foundation monitoring and materials testing. Hardy said the company expects to be using the services of at least 30 more employees during the project.
“Universal has had strong growth in West Central Florida for two decades and counting,” Hardy said. “The Gateway Expressway project is a great example of the company’s continued expansion.”
President Israel echoed Hardy’s comments, saying “My father started this company 53 years ago with a pickup truck and a small drill. Our growth has been amazing, but it still comes down to keeping your promises to your customers.”
