Central Florida lost one of its premier philanthropists and businessmen.
J.A. “Jim” Hinson, former President, CEO and Chairman of the Dr. Phillips Charities passed away Monday surrounded by his family in Orlando.
His work and his life touched many in Central Florida and he leaves behind an impressive legacy of good works and betterment of our community.
He personally oversaw over $150 million dollars in grants while at Dr. Phillips Charities. Jim’s leadership was demonstrated by extensive community involvement throughout Central Florida including: the Orlando Health Foundation where he served as a Director; the Committee of 100 of Orange County where he served as president for over 25 years, Junior Achievement where he was a former director and previously served as treasurer and vice president, Ivanhoe Foundation where he served as a director and president; the YMCA where he was a former member of the Metropolitan YMCA board of directors, as well as a former board member of the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA where he served on the development committee, he served as a board member and president of United Arts, president and chairman of Florida Citrus Sports, and three years on the Orange County Commission for Children.
In recognition of his leadership, Hinson was awarded with the honorary degree, Doctor of Public Service, by the University of Central Florida and was inducted into the Junior Achievement Mid-Florida Business Hall of Fame. He also received the UCP Jack Holloway Star of Gratitude Award; Junior Achievement Bronze and Silver Leadership Awards; Junior Achievement Henry Cragg Volunteer Award; Orange County’s Law Day Liberty Bell Award; the Junior Achievement Spirit of Achievement Award, the Central Florida YMCA John Sterchi Award, and the Association of Fund Raising Professionals H. Clifford Lee Award for Professional Advancement.
