A Feast for the Senses
by Dave Nevill Jr. of OrlandoFoodScene.com
If you would indulge me for just a moment, I would like to start with a simple challenge to you: walk through the doors of The Osprey Tavern and try not to be impressed by what all of your senses are telling you. Located on the corner of Jake Street and New Broad Street in Baldwin Park, just a block from Lake Baldwin, this new bespoke concept from Owner Jason Chin and Executive Chef Joseph Burnett is elevating Orlando’s local dining experience.
Allow your eyes to wander as you enter the restaurant and soak in the beautiful space. The design aesthetic is hard to put a finger on, but I would describe it as “cozy elegance.” The wide-open kitchen gives guests a fantastic view behind the curtain as the chefs work their magic, and the bar is a great place for a craft cocktail with friends served up by some very talented tenders. The chefs table near the back of the restaurant can accommodate parties of 12 and is walled on one side by the wine cellar, allowing you to see some of the many great choices offered.
Our group started our meal with at least one item from each of the four starter categories and our server Joey recommended a few choice wines that accented each. Our opening dishes included the Samish Bay Oysters, Crispy Sweetbreads, Charred Peel & Eat Shrimp, Hamachi and the all-house-prepared Charcuterie. We savored the presentation of each dish for a few moments longer than at most restaurants because they looked as delicious as they tasted.
The trio of dinner plates started with the Florida Black Grouper, Trout, and Porchetta. The fish were cooked perfectly and the trout had a very cool presentation, but the Porchetta reigned supreme. Paired with roasted caraway carrots, musk melon and marcona almonds, this dish is the de facto way to enjoy pork. Knowing how much time, skill, and effort went into creating this made it all the more memorable.
After reading this article, I hope you will accept my challenge and visit Osprey Tavern. Everyone at the restaurant, from my first greeting to my last goodnight, was committed to making sure we had a great experience, and I know they’ll do the same for you.
