How to Revive Your Fitness this Season
The cold nights are beginning to become less frequent and the days are getting longer. It is safe to say that spring is in the air all across Central Florida. This is a great time to shake off our winter doldrums and refocus our energies on an active and healthy lifestyle.
Although we don’t necessarily have the harsh winters that our friends in the north experience, we can still fall victim to what I like to call, “The Winter Slowdown.” The Winter Slowdown is that time period just after New Year’s where your “set-in-stone resolution” has been delayed for one reason or another or your “cheat meal” became a “cheat week” or even “cheat month.” Don’t beat yourself up – it happens to all of us.
With spring here we can use this season to jumpstart our fitness routines again and get ready for summer with a renewed focus and excitement. Think of it as New Year’s 2.0.
Here are five tips to get some “spring” in your step this season.
1. Start Off Right
Before you have your coffee and breakfast, take a few minutes and start your day with a glass of water with lemon in it. This does two things: First, it sets you off mentally on a good healthy foot, and secondly, lemon has amazing cleansing properties that help your digestive system, liver and kidneys.
2. Get Up And Get Going
After your lemon water has woken you from your slumber, use that energy to get out and get moving first thing in the morning. If possible, use the morning to get in all your cardiovascular exercise for the day. It tends to be easier to get up in the morning when it isn’t so cold anymore – so take advantage.
3. Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone
Spring is a great time to try new things. Switch up your workout routine to incorporate some new exercises. We tend to get comfortable with what we are good at, but your body/fitness won’t improve simply by doing the same thing over and over again. We need to constantly be challenging ourselves to see the improvements we want. Slight variations to your favorite workouts will help bring a new energy to your everyday session.
4. Spring Cleaning
As you go through your closet and start reorganizing for the new season, take a good, hard look at your workout gear. If anything truly needs to be replaced, now is the time to do it. Take a look at your shoes specifically – are they the right type of shoe for your chosen activity? Are they worn out? The proper shoes will help you avoid injury in the long-run.
5. Have A Spring Fling
Having someone to keep you accountable is a great way to stick with your workout routine. Whether it’s your wife, husband or a friend, it is important to have a workout partner. Not only will that person be there to assist or spot you while trying new workouts, but they can help keep you excited and motivated. We recommend trying new workouts with certified professional trainers or by taking classes at your local gym to avoid injury due to not using proper form.
This is a great time of year to take full advantage of living in Florida. With the nice climate just outside your door, get out there and really enjoy the day. Take a jog on the beach, walk your dog through the park or, my personal favorite, take a bike ride.
Spring is an amazing time to get refocused on a healthy and active lifestyle. Be encouraged by this natural season to get out there and enjoy!
